Strategy and tactics: what is the difference?

Strategy describes the direction of your play, while tactics solve the immediate problems of a position. Both levels work together throughout a game.

Planning several moves ahead

A strategic plan may involve developing pieces, controlling space or preserving resources. It provides direction without replacing the need to check each move. When the position changes, the plan may need to change too.

Calculating a sequence

A tactical problem demands exact replies. In chess it may involve exchanges; in draughts it may be a mandatory capture chain. An attractive overall idea fails if one reply loses an essential piece.

Using both approaches

Identify immediate threats first, then choose a move that supports your plan. Afterwards, ask whether a mistake came from a poor overall evaluation or an overlooked reply. These call for different kinds of practice.
