Games for one or two: choosing a format
Player count changes the experience of a familiar mechanic. A solo puzzle, a computer opponent and another person offer different reasons to play.

A goal of your own
A solo puzzle lets you focus without waiting for someone else. You can pause and return if the game supports saving. Before closing the tab, check that your progress has actually been recorded.
Sharing one device
Local two-player games suit a shared table or laptop. Turn order must be clear, and hidden information should stay hidden. A game with secret placement may need a handover screen between turns.
Playing at a distance
Online play needs a working connection and compatible modes for both players. Someone visiting a website is not necessarily seeking the same game at the same moment. If matchmaking offers a computer opponent, that status should be clear before play begins.
