Dominoes: managing the open ends

A domino decision is about more than finding a tile that fits. The two open ends determine which values the next player will be able to use.

Compare both ends

If a tile fits at either end, compare the resulting exposed values. Think about the numbers that will remain in your hand. A useful move does not always shed the highest-value tile: preserving a continuation can matter more.

Track values already played

The chain shows which values have been used. This helps you judge how convenient an open value may be for the remaining tiles. However, an opponent choosing another play does not prove they lack a particular number.

Consider the end of the round

In the ROSA variant, a player without a legal move draws until a playable tile appears or the boneyard is empty. Two consecutive passes block the round, with remaining pip penalties compared. High-value tiles in your hand therefore deserve special attention as the round approaches its end.
