Matching symbols are only the first requirement in Mahjong Solitaire. Both tiles in a pair must also be free under the layout’s rules.

Check above and beside each tile
A tile cannot be removed while another tile covers it from above. At least one of its left or right sides must also be free. A symbol that is clearly visible in the middle of a row is therefore not necessarily available to match.
Choose pairs that open the layout
When several matching pairs are available, consider which one releases higher layers or long rows. Locate the other copies of the symbol before removing two convenient tiles: an unfortunate choice may leave the remaining copies blocked.
Study a blocked position
Hint identifies an available pair, while Undo lets you explore a different choice. Shuffle changes the position, so use it deliberately. Watch not just the tile count but the new free sides created by each removal. Opening future choices is often more useful than removing the easiest visible pair.
